Episode 2 of The F Words: Difficult conversations with Dr Leandra Brady-Walker is #Fear: Different types of fear with James Tuckerman.
James Tuckerman is no stranger to fear.
Not only did he start is own print magazine, Anthill but then he took that magazine online creating Anthill online and then he started his own school in Not so Freaky University and he is also the creator of the biggest small business awards, The Anthill Cool Company Awards (which by the by receives more applications that the Telstra Business Awards - or so I am told).
But all of this pales in comparison to the scariest experience of James' life - his kidnapping in Morocco.
What we talk about in this episode:
Being Kidnapped in Morocco and his subsequent escape
The 3 types of fear - Fear of Missing out (FOMO), Fear of Ridicule and Fear of the tangible (like physical harm or financial)
The advice James' mum gave him about fear
Real fear vs imagined fear
Fear as a driving force
Some of my favourite things James said:
Putting fear in perspective
"Compare the fear of starting a business to a threat on your life....Worst case scenario, you end up washing dishes or with egg on your face"
"What do people envy about you? We are often so wrapped up in envy and fear of missing out, that we often forget to just be grateful and in the moment"
One Small Step:
Only hang around optimistic people. If your are fearful, hang around people who have done what you want to do.
And your super power would be....
How cool would it be to be able to touch someone and be able to speak their language?
James talked about Dan Norris' book Create or Hate - check that out here.
